Hi. I've had requests to talk a little about the kit that I use. I sit firmly in the Canon camp, having 5D Mk II and 60D cameras. The 5D is my main camera, having a full frame 21 megapixel sensor. Full frame means that the area that the light falls on, inside the camera, is the same size as a 35mm negative. This is particularly important if you want to blow up part of your photo to, say, A3 as the detail is still very high and the end product, therefore, does not have that 'blockyness' that indicates that a picture has been pushed past it's maximum capability. It also has an aluminium chassis, which enables it to cope with the odd knock. I usually use a 24-105mm L IS USM zoom lens with the 5D. What do all those symbols mean, I hear you ask? Well, 'L' indicates Luxury (or professional) build, 'IS' is for Image Stabilizer, which helps keep any slight judder under control, and 'USM' stands for Ultrasonic Motor, an extremely precise and quiet method of auto focusing. This lens is my main stay, covering close up through to telephoto. The images this camera and lens combination produces consistently amaze me, especially at low light levels, the only negative point being that the lens is an f/4 so not as fast as others you can buy. Occasionally I need something with a bit more clout, so my second lens is a Canon 100-400mm L IS USM. This lens is an f/4.5-5.6, meaning that the fastest I can get it to is f/4.5 at 100mm and f/5.6 at 400mm. Still, I have never had any real problems with that in my work. The end results are quite something. The 100-400mm is quite heavy though and, although I can hold it steady, it is best to have the camera mounted on a tripod. Both these lenses carry 77mm filters which is useful (saves me buying doubles) and I protect the front of each lens with a Hoya Pro Digital UV (Ultra Violet) filter. More about the 60D next time....
