Kit - PC

Hi. Continuing the blog on the kit that I use. My PC is an Acer Aspire with a quad core Intel i5 64 bit processor, 8Gb of memory and enough hard disk to store everything I do! To protect the photos and make it easier to search them, my hard disk is partitioned into various smaller disks. All the data is backed up on a continuous basis, with a full data backup being taken once a week (just in case !!). With disk space so cheap, the cost of losing data far outways the cost of the hardware. For continuous backup I use a Seagate Dashboard 3Tb disk (that's 3000 Gb, or 3,000,000 Mb!) With a photo typically taking up ~25Mb, that means I can store 120,000 photos on one disk - all for around £100 and, once set up, it backs up the data by itself. Not bad! What I really like about it is that if you ask to see a certain date it will go away and come back with all the current versions of the data on the backup disk for that date only, ignoring any changes that were backed up later. Invaluable if you want to check how something was before you altered it. I have two screens, with the desktop extended across them. This gives me so much flexibility it is unreal! I can have something up on one screen (e.g. a spreadsheet) and then open a word document on the other screen and be able to work on both, without having to swap between them. I chose HP for the screens - with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a 23" screen I can work on my photos with ease. To ensure that they are sync'd correctly and display colours in a consistent fashion, I use a Datacolor Spyder 3 Pro calibration device. This consists of a computer program (doesn't everything?) and a little gizmo that measures the ambient light. Together, they ensure that my screens are always displaying true colours. Next time ...
