Kit - Printers

Hi. Continuing the blog on the kit that I use. For printers, I still stay with the Canon camp. My everyday printer is an MG-3150 printer and scanner. I find the quality to be exceptional, especially the scanning which is vital for my work on restoring old and damaged photographs. You can not improve on a badly scanned original so this part of the process has to be spot on! Like most printers of its ilke, it uses 2 ink cartridges, one colour and one black. I use Canon originals bought over the internet and always maintain a store of spares. In the past, with previous printers, I have tried using 'compatible' inks, but never seem to get the same finish, so decided to stick with Canon when I got this one. For my work, however, I use a Canon Pro 9500 Mk 2 printer. This is a much more serious printer and can produce gallery quality prints up to A3+ size (that's a bit bigger than ordinary A3). The output is incredible. To get this quality, however, it uses 10 separate inks! It seems that every time I turn it on I am replacing one or other of them. Again, I use Canon originals at around £10 each on the internet. The results are worth the effort. I have just bought a companion to the Spyder 3 Pro screen calibration - the Spyder Print printer calibration system which carries out the same thing but with the printer. This should ensure that what I see on the screen is what prints out and avoids any frustrating, time (and ink!) consuming rejects. I also frame my photographs, using a black double mount and a slim plain, silver coloured, frame. I find the simplicity of the framing enhances the photograph. Next time ... Software.
